John Currin (b. 1962, Boulder CO), obtained an MFA from Yale University, New Haven CT (1986), following a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh PA (1984). He lives and works in New York, and exhibited a series of new paintings for Sadie Coles HQ’s inaugural exhibition in 1997. Currin is widely recognised for his figurative oil paintings in which themes of sexual personae and historical painterly genres appear in surreal and at times, disconcerting guises. Oscillating between a graphic sexuality and playful symbolism, Currin captures the tones and textures of everyday life with an acute sensitivity and a meticulous attention to detail.
