Carl Andre
Carl Andre was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1935, and later studied at Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts. Notable among the many retrospectives of his work are those held at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, 1970; the Laguna Gloria Art Museum, Austin, Texas, 1978; the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, 1987; the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, England, 1996; the Musée Cantini, Marseilles, 1997; and Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland, 2001. Andre has been included in numerous group shows, including the recent Von Carl Andre bis Bruce Nauman at Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin, 2006, and Singular Forms (Sometimes Repeated): Art from 1951 to the Present, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, 2004. His work has been the subject of numerous monographs, including CUTS: Texts 1959-2004, published by MIT Press, 2005, and About Carl Andre: Critical Texts Since 1965, published by Ridinghouse, 2006.
