53 Central Street, London EC1 (HQ off-site)
In his first exhibtion at Sadie Coles HQ, acclaimed artist Matthew Barney presents three sculptures and a photograph related to his recent feature film, DRAWING RESTRAINT 9. The most complex installment of an ongoing series, DRAWING RESTRAINT 9 explores resistance as a pre-requisite for development, and features Barney and musician Bj’rk as Occidental Guests aboard a whaling vessel in the Sea of Japan.
The three sculptures in this exhibition are portraits of the film’s protagonists - the male and female figures and the whaling ship itself. Barney's sculptures recall the architecture of the vessel and the physical transformations that took place, reflecting on the relationship between the Japanese Hosts and the titular Occidental Guests.
