Sarah Lucas

In her work, Sarah Lucas takes a critical and humorous look at aspects of the human body and its social attributions. Characterized by a radical yet elegant formal language, she creates photographs, sculptures and installations questioning social norms and gender stereotypes. Everyday objects and casual language often find their way into her work, which she playfully places in new contexts of meaning and explores fundamental themes of sculpture. In her first institutional exhibition in Germany since 2005, Lucas brings together works from almost four decades of artistic creation. These range from early objects from the 1990s to recent works in which she further develops questions of the corporeal in the social field.This is the catalogue of the first institutional exhibition of Sarah Lucas’s works in Germany since 2005. In her work, Sarah Lucas engages in a critical, humorous way with aspects of the human body and its social ascriptions. In her often provocative objects, photographs, sculptures, and installations, she assembles everyday and found objects to questions social norms and gender stereotypes, using a radical and yet elegant formal language.
