Karimah Ashadu is a British-born Nigerian artist and film director who lives and works between Hamburg and Lagos. Ashadu's practice addresses work, patriarchy, and notions of independence related to Nigeria's socioeconomic and sociocultural

With "Machine Boys", Ashadu explores the informal economy of motorcycle taxis – popularly known as "Okada" – in the megacity of Lagos. A few years ago, they were banned due to the government's inability to regulate the industry. The work depicts a hardy group of motorcyclists who continue this illegal work in pursuit of economic independence and independence. In "Machine Boys," Ashadu dwells on the consequences of this ban, while also depicting the daily rituals and challenges faced by Okada drivers.
