Kati Heck in Collection in the Park, Human Nature

Middelheim Museum, Antwerp
Now on View

The theme 'human nature' focuses on humans and how they see themselves in relation to others and nature. Artworks reflect how our view of man evolves over time. Can we link this to a changing relationship between man and nature?

This work is part of a larger whole that emerged after an absurd sausage fight with life-size human-like sausage figures — a performance that Heck organized in Austria in 2006. The polyester sculptures are very expressive. They are at once funny and endearing, but they also have something tragic and gruesome about them.

Kati Heck combines image and text in a playful, often ironic way. She refers to graffiti, propaganda or advertising, without a clear message. The bloodbath of the sausages Dabei sein ist Alles also has no explicit message. It is an invitation to look at human relationships, social structures and the thin line between the absurd and the uncomfortable.

Especially for this new installation in Het Huis, the artist came up with an extra activation in which she wants to turn the pavilion into a homely meeting place.
