Ugo Rondinone
the sun

Riyadh Art Commission, Saudi Arabia
Now on view

the sun (2021) by Ugo Rondinone presents a circular form cast from vine branches and finished in radiant gold.

Twisted into a ring with protruding twigs, the sculpture hovers just off the wall, creating the illusion of a celestial body suspended in space.

The work reflects on cycles of light and life, using natural forms to explore concepts of time, transformation, and spiritual resonance.

Rondinone chose vines for their symbolism—growth, dormancy, rebirth—mirroring the solar rhythm.

The simple geometry becomes an eloquent void: luminous, suspended, and infinite.

This work belongs to a wider series exploring the sun as both metaphor and physical presence.

Informed by Romantic painting, particularly the landscapes of Caspar David Friedrich, the sun invites quiet reflection.

Through its golden stillness, it offers a moment of pause—connecting the viewer to a world that is eternal, elemental, and filled with silent wonder.
