Sole Crushing

Meriem Bennani's solo exhibition at Lafayette Anticipations, Sole Crushing (22 October, 2025 - 08 February, 2026), transformed the institution into an seismic sound installation, where an orchestrated cacophony of over two hundred flip-flops played a musical composition. Spread throughout the building, the congolmerate pieces of the installation evoked ritual and movement; whether it be found in the energy of a crowd, a protest, a stadium, or a dakka marrakchia, a traditional Morrocan musical ceremony. Capturing fragments of the exhibition is this accompanying publication. Featuring a series of photographs of flip-flops paired with text, the artist has anthropomorphised the mundanity of objects like flip-flops, into realised personalities full of feeling and meaning.
