WHAT DO YOU SEE, YOU PEOPLE, GAZING AT ME
WHAT DO YOU SEE, YOU PEOPLE, GAZING AT ME is a richly illustrated board book produced as an afterward to the eponymous group exhibition presented at Sadie Coles HQ, London, in 2021. The exhibition featured the work of eight artists who engage both two- and three-dimensional media to manifest the body and express its capacity for action; and in turn conjuring an inter-relational dialogue with the viewer’s own sense of self. For these artists, figuration extends beyond documentation, it is a potent tool of expression and a testimony of a new perspective. Their works on view reflected confrontations of myriad themes, from inequalities of power via race or gender to those that redirect our assumptions about histories and the hierarchies they established. Their works disrupt expectations about which bodies warrant representation, and why.
Participating artists include: Natalie Ball, Kevin Beasley, Georgia Gardner Gray, Tau Lewis, Jonathan Lyndon Chase, Simphiwe Ndzube, Agata Słowak and Frieda Toranzo Jaeger. Graphic design and typesetting: Dominik Krauss
