Michele Abeles (b. 1977, New York) characteristically uses photography as a tool for the exploration of the body and human form. In her imagery, the artist alternates between treatments of the body as a readymade – the body as object – and the body as a site for discovery and display, knowable only as abstracted, dispersed, projected onto, exposed, or as dressed up – a vessel of style. Maintaining an anonymous approach within her work, Abeles’s practice is largely preoccupied with her ongoing exploration of concepts of finitude and escape, of reinverting military technologies, and of the figure as both code and clock.
