This monograph features an extensive overview of the unusual photographs, sculptures and installations by Sarah Lucas, which often appear raw and aggressive. In her works, the artist frequently unmasks the chauvinism of slang. Even though it might seem acceptable to describe a young woman as a "chick", Lucas's provocative work entitled Chicken Knickers, however, reveals hidden associations and, with true dry British humour, irrevocably strips the expression of any cuteness. Another significant element of Lucas's oeuvre are her androgynous self-portraits, in which the artists, with challenging gaze and a cigarette dangling from her lips, undermines the cool male pose she often adopts by using accessories with female connotations. This publication features works from the following shows: GOD IS DAD (Gladstone Gallery, 2005), Temple of Bacchus (Milton Keynes Gallery, 2003), Sarah Lucas’s Tate Modern show of 2002, The Fig Show (Sadie Coles HQ, 2000), Self-Portraits and More Sex (Centre Cultural Tecla Salsa, 2000), The Law (St. John’s Lofts, 1997) and many more.
