Working across painting, sculpture and collage, Agnes Scherer (b. 1985, Lohr am Main) examines power structures and their psychosocial foundations, forms of female experience, states of mind shaped by capitalist realities, and the uncanny reappearance of historical systems of order in the present. Her practice takes shape through staged installations and performative object theatres in which puppets and particularly marionettes often function as pivotal characters. As both tangible presences and conceptual figures of entanglement, they reveal complex interrelations that would otherwise elude immediate perception. The works encourage viewers to actively engage with and interpret the elements of the systemic arrangements. Through direct engagement with the artwork, the true images unfold as mental images. Scherer’s exploration of formats is informed by art-historical and anthropological research, as well as a strong interest in popular art forms of the early modern period, particularly in the realm of fairground and show culture.
